Accomplishments during 2024, include the following:WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT 2nd year of the SVMA CNC Machinist Apprenticeship Program. 5 existing employers & 3 new apprentices enrolled (9 in total). SVMA and Folsom Lake College (FLC) submitted the Quality Control Apprenticeship to the State of CA Department of Apprenticeship Standards. Approval anticipated Spring 2025 and launch the program with FLC during the Fall 2025. On May 4, 2-24 SVMA hosts the inaugural SVMA High School Manufacturing Challenge at San Juan High School 20 high school students representing 6 different high schools participated. Over 60 manufacturers, parents, volunteers and civic leaders attended the event. SVMA Apprenticeship Program received $300,000 over two years from Sierra College and the CA Community Colleges to support expansion and enrollment into the CNC and QC Apprenticeship Programs. Program goals include enrolling 25 new apprentices. SVMA partnered with the Roseville Area and Rancho Cordova Chambers of Commerce to support their Talent Pipeline Management Strategies focused on growing the manufacturing workforce.EDUCATION SVMA members hosted tours for 12 high-school and adult ed classes. SVMA members participated in 9 high school and community college career technical education advisory meetings. SVMA members participated in 8 community job fairs. SVMA members participated in 8 college & career fairs. SVMA partnered with the local community colleges to host four events during the past year. Sierra College hosted an open house for manufacturers on 3/28 to learn about the Mechatronics, Advanced Manufacturing and Welding Programs. Over 50 manufacturers attended. Sacramento City College hosted the Engineering and Technology open house on 4/18. Over 30 manufacturers and 200 current, former and future students attended. Yuba College Welding and Manufacturing Programs hosted an open house on 5/15. Over 40 manufacturers and educators participated to learn about work-based learning opportunities.MEMBERSHIP/PROFESSONAL DEVELOPMENT SVMA profiled stories about 5 local Women In Manufacturing leaders on LinkedIn. SVMA hosted professional webinars for members about growing supply chain networks (Sustainment & CMTC), Aligning Talent Development Strategies with Business Strategies and the NIMS Smart Training Solutions. SVMA hosted five social/networking events for manufacturers to strengthen the local manufacturing sector. SVMA/CHARLES A JONES REGIONAL MANUFACTURING TRAINING CENTER During the past year 7 students completed the Intro Manufacturing Program, 2 students completed the Welding I class and 18 students enrolled in the Manufacturing Technician Program. Of the 18 students, 12 graduated and 9 have found employment with area employers such as Ceratizit, Insight Manufacturing Services, GNB Valves, Siemens Mobility, and Polar Service Center. Liquidated Damages During a period of low cash-flow, SVMAs Executive Director agreed to defer payment of wages until cash-flow improved. California Labor Code allows an employee to recover statutory penalties for late payment of wages while still employed. SVMA agreed to pay $19,440 as a penalty (called a waiting time penalty) to the Executive Director in accordance with the calculation specified in the statute. The IRS has ruled that such payments are not considered wages and are exempt from FICA. Such payments are considered non-compensatory liquidated damages.
