The grants are meant to help these organizations maintain their public humanities programs and retain there core employees. Twenty one organizations received funds and were able to sustain their humanities programs as a result of the SHARP Act grant program. 175005 0 8145 BRAVE CONVERSATIONS: Named in honor of tribal historian Marilyn Hudson, the Brave Conversations Project (MHBCP) builds community through conversation. Today's leading problem-solvers take center stage, offering a thought-provoking presentation followed by authentic, moderator-led discussion in small groups. Attendees explore new ideas and meet interesting people. The program's goals are to explore critical issues, foster philosophical conversations, inspire individual growth, and promote active and engaged citizenship. The goal for attendees is to leave feeling renewed, hopeful, and more connected to their communities and each other. This program is offered in-person and live-streamed online. NDHC hosted 2 in person events throughout the year and had a total audience of 794. 139713 0 0 WE THE PEOPLE: The We the People The Citizen and the Constitution Program (WTP) promotes civic competence and responsibility among the nation's upper elementary and secondary students. The curriculum is an innovative course of instruction on the history and principles of the United States constitutional democratic republic. The We the People print textbooks' interactive strategies, relevant content, and simulated congressional hearings make teaching and learning exciting for students and teachers. All applicants are required to submit a written application describing their proposed project in detail and a budget which conforms to NDHC grant guidelines. Successful applicants sign a grant agreement and submit reports, both narrative and financial, at the end of the project detailing their activities and expenses. Any significant changes to the project activities or budget must receive written approval in advance. Grantees which are subject to federal audit requirements due to the amount of federal financial assistance received by the organization are required to inform the NDHC of any audit findings which are relevant to the expenditure of NDHC grant funds. Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11b The form 990 and related schedules were prepared by the Financial Operations Director and reviewed by the Executive Director. An electronic copy of the form 990 and related schedules was emailed to each member of the NDHC Board of Directors and comments were solicited before the return was filed with the IRS. . Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12c At each meeting of the NDHC Board of Directors actual and potential conflicts of interest are discussed and ruled on by the NDHC Chair before discussions and voting on grant applications and potential projects take place. Any board members deemed to have a conflict of interest are excused from the meeting during the discussion and abstain from voting on the relevant grant application or project. The chair monitors the outside activities of the Executive Director to ensure no actual or potential conflicts of interest exist Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15 The compensation of the Executive Director is reviewed annually and any adjustments are approved by the NDHC Board of Directors. The NDHC Executive Committee conducts the annual performance review and part of that review involves analyzing the salary survey data for Executive Directors in the region (provided by the Federation of State Humanities Councils). All board actions related to the Executive Director compensation are recorded in the board meeting minutes. The most recent performance review and compensation adjustments took place at the October, 2023 NDHC Board of Directors meeting. The NDHC governing documents (articles of incorporations, bylaws, policy manuals. etc.) are also available to the general public upon request.
